Smoking Chefs

Do all chefs smoke? Recently, my addiction to reality cooking shows has become almost unbelievable. I simply cannot get enough. In one week alone my days go something like this:
Sunday: Food Network Star
Monday; Hell's Kitchen (aka Ghetto Kitchen) and Masterchef
Tuesday: Repeat of same shows from Monday
Wednesday: Around the World in 80 Plates (Let's be honest. I only started watching this show because of Curtis Stone.)
Thursday: Chef Wanted

At some point over the weekend I get hooked on a Diners, Drive-ins, and Dives marathon or Iron Chef showdown where I root against Mario and Bobby like it's a job.

After watching all of these shows, I have come to a number of conclusions about cooks but my number one is "Do you have to smoke to be a chef?"

Doesn't smoking inhibit your ability to taste? I mean it just baffles me that every time I tune into a cooking show, everyone seems to have a cigarette hanging from their mouths. I don't really have any chef friends, so I don't have anyone to actually reference. I just don't understand. What is appealing about smoking? The smell? The taste? The ability to have cancer directly in your mouth? Does it provide stress relief? I wouldn't know I have never tried. Never will unless of course I end up getting cast on Top Chef, Around the World, or Hell's Kitchen where I am pretty sure it is required that you become a smoker so you can sit around with other chefs and talk shit about each other.
